Within the Parish of Poplar there are now two Readers.
Helen Palmer has been a Reader since 2003. She is married with two children. She has been at All Saints for 35 years. Within the parish she undertakes teaching and pastoral duties. She is a friend of St Saviour's Priory in Haggerston, likes all kinds of music and loves gardening.
Modupe Olufunmilayo Kenku is a mother of three and a grandmother of seven, ages ranging from 11yrs to 9 months.
She was born in Lagos, Nigeria into a Christian family and attended Sunday school where she was taught how to read the Bible, and learn by heart the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23.
She was baptised when about 8 years old and later confirmed in her church in Lagos. She used to admire the Lay Readers at that time - they had different roles in church - preaching, serving, teaching, etc. The inspiration to want to become a Reader came from that source.
She joined All Saints Church Poplar in 1995 and grew to become a side person, server and communion assistant. After her admission/licensing as a Reader/LLM, apart from preaching, teaching and leading services, she took up other roles, one of which is setting up and leading prayer ministry. The group meets once a month to pray, share the Word of God, and to support people spiritually and emotionally.
